There are two different programmes for parents and carers of children with autism:
- The Barnados – Cygnet Autism programme
- Understanding Me
The Barnados- Cygnet Autism programme is a 6 week 2 hour session programme for parents of children aged 5-16 years with Autism. Parents of children with Autism face all the usual positive and difficult challenges of parenting, and quite a few more with the autistic population being a vulnerable group. Cygnet combines practical strategies and support for parents specifically around Autism. Sessions include topics: communication, sensory issues, understanding and managing behaviour.
The Understanding Me programme has all the same elements as the Understanding Your Child which is a 10 session group for parents.. However the Understanding Me course is directly applicable to parents with children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) from 0 – 5 years. Children with ASD are first and foremost children and the course will help parents understand what their child with ASD might be feeling, it will also help parents develop positive relationships and understand behaviour better. The group is ran by facilitators who have extensive knowledge of ASD. If you are interested in the Understanding Me programme, please contact the Specialist Health Visiting Team at the Child Development Centre on 01922 605604.
